Just read an article talking about how shallow todays contemporary worship music is compared traditional hymns. Im glad you sent it to me specifically and here is my response to you and anyone else whod care to know: (a) I understand that most hymns attempt to take you on this deep theological journey that challenges you to engage your mind as you filter through some of the metaphors used. (b)And to go on and say that when youre singing, the contemporary songs only trigger responses based on emotions and not because youve thought about the lyrics. So many other points but Ill stop and respond: ___________________________________________________________ (a) during a time of musical worship for me I personally dont want to get caught up in trying to figure out what was trying to be said (deep metaphors). I like to keep it Simple, Singable, and Scriptural. Going deeper is on my on time, or with a group whos interested in further study with you. (b) your emotions dont just happen. they are triggered by your thoughts. so as im singing about a particular subject I will have certain thoughts that reinforce what Im singing and helps shift what Im singing from just a thought to what I believe, then whatever emotion i feel at the time is necessary for me. ___________________________________________________________ Dont get me wrong, I have a great respect for traditional music/hymns (of which I grew up on, but feel led by God to reach a different group of people. Call me shallow or whatever youd like but above all else I hope and pray that each of you enjoy worshipping and engaging in whichever style/environment you feel led. #manystyles #ONEGOD
