Just read my leaflet from the council about how terrible a parent - TopicsExpress

Just read my leaflet from the council about how terrible a parent I would be if I were to take my children on holiday in term time. My heart sinks every time I see this nonsense. Such a huge mistake. I believe that travel is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child. Widening their horizons, expanding their minds, limiting future prejudices, expanding their ambitions and showing them the world is truly their oyster. Teaching them about currency, maps, timetables, languages, cultures, cuisine, history...teaching them responsibility from looking after passports, to putting on suntan lotion. Organisational and planning skills, planning and packing. Teaching them vital social skills, and how to make friends with someone when they cant understand a word theyre saying. As for their parents, holidays can either heal fractured relationships or be the catalyst for much-needed change. So many children are going to miss out now that families are forced to pay premium prices if they want a holiday out of term time. I find it heartbreaking. And for the record Cardiff Council, thanks for the concern but Im pretty confident that a week out of school wouldnt make my 6 year old three times as likely to fail his exams in 10 years time...if he lived in Finland he wouldnt have even started a syllabus yet.
