Entenmanns closing Bay Shore plant, cutting 178 jobs March 27, 2014 BY MAURA MCDERMOTT Entenmanns will close its Bay Shore bakery by July, impacting 178 workers, as the company shifts production to other plants. The facility will continue to operate as a sales and distribution center, and will employ workers there in research and development, technology and marketing, Entenmanns parent company Bimbo Bakeries USA said in a news release Thursday. This was a difficult decision because of the highly engaged team of associates at this bakery, Rod Cunha, vice president of operations for the metro area, said in a statement. However, after a critical assessment, it was apparent that the facility, first opened in 1961, cannot operate efficiently on a cost competitive basis with the other bakeries in our system. He continued, We are committed to ensuring that there will be no change in the quality, freshness or availability in the Entenmanns products consumers have come to know and love. The closing will affect 178 of the plants 265 workers, Bimbo announced. The company said it employs more than 1,600 people in New York State, including hundreds in Suffolk County. Entenmanns also operates a store in Lynbrook, according to the companys website. The company was founded in 1898 by William Entenmann, a German immigrant, who established a bakery in Brooklyn. In 1905, he moved to a small store on Bay Shores Main Street. The company relocated in 1961 to a modest factory on Fifth Avenue in Bay Shore that grew to become a 14-acre plant that once employed about 1,500 people. Bimbo Bakeries USA is the U.S. arm of Mexicos Grupo Bimbo, which calls itself one of the worlds largest baking companies with more than 126,000 employees and operations in 19 countries. Its American brands include Arnold, Boboli, Freihofers, Sara Lee, Stroehmann and Thomas.
