Just reading these posts about mail box stealing and theft up here makes me want to share something that happened to me about 20 years ago when we first moved up here. We were moving from a place we had rented to the place we had just bought and while packing and going to the dump with trash, I had overlooked a cancelled check. Im OCD about ripping or cutting anything with our name on it, but this one had slipped through. About two months later I started getting odd calls from small stores saying my check had not cleared for what I had purchased. These were strange clothing, small appliance stores and eateries. I went to one of the stores in person to see what was going on. Come to find out that someone had found my cancelled check and had ordered checks online with my info. I contacted the DAs office and thank GOD the account that the check had been written on had been cancelled the year before! That and Bank of Hemet in Anza went above board to give me the cancelled checks written to show the DA it wasnt me who had written them. Statements from the smaller stores from employees given to the DA, the woman came in with her friend, she had no teeth, no ID and sometimes barefoot! Shed hit WalMart two to three times PER day for hundreds at a time!! $10,000 dollars later they finally caught her off of La Cima. Sadly to say, her stealing my identity was only the bottom of the pile that they could get her for. She had done worse and they wanted to nail her for that to get the highest prison time. So folks, please shred every single thing that has your name on it. The thieves are very smart and dont give a crap who they hurt in the process. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to share to help people be aware.
