Just recently I had commented in favour of the speaker of the national assembly decision not to send his colleagues to a meeting held in Cameroon( west Africa ) because of its proximity to home of current Ebola outbreak . My support is founded upon the bases of my research over the years on microbes and their destructiveness . Among the many viruses and bacteria , I place Ebola in the top tier of most lethal viruses roaming our planet . Ebola has the efficacy to inflict death on the majority of those infected in short time frame and the means to do so efficiently ; unlike HiV ,Hepatitis ,etc .. , Ebola is transmissible through all of our bodily excretion which increases its lethality .Those who are Infected (especially in poor countries) are at a disadvantage because of their inadequate healthcare system, which Ebola can easily overwhelm (examples can be seen in the countries of origin ).First responders ,health care workers, and care givers, are usually not equipped with the right gears and tools to render effective care-- and because they are on the frontline they often the first to contract , spread and die . This breakdown in the health care system results in the infected been treated at home by relatives and friends who out of natural instinct renders assistance ,only in turn become ill ,and the rate of infection explodes as is evidence in the current outbreak . The pattern described as well as geography and culture is what catapulted the proliferation of the current out -break . The late response by the W.H.O and CDC is a factor in the out-break spunning out of control and spreading from its epic centre to beyond the borders of the country of origin . Today it has crossed five countries in Africa and 3 three continents and has presented itself in the largest state of the United States . While the U.S. and allies are expending billions on the so called war on terror a biological weapon has landed on its shore with a kill rate of 90% . Are we about the witness the fall of the modern world ? Only time will tell . Little Guyana can hardly deal with the communicable and non communicable diseases we have on our hands ,much less a virus as potent as Ebola. This brings me back to the my first paragraph where I alluded to our speakers decision being a good call. However my comments in support of proactive action by the speaker drew criticism as a few commenters found the decision by our speaker of the house to be cowardly . I am not an epidemiologist or virologist ,but logical deduction can be made using mathematical estimates to predict an eventuality and that equation sums clear danger . Many optimists are quick to overlook a ominous out come, as it often means having to confront the truth ,one which they hope never happens . While staying positive is important in any crisis , in a situation where the enemy is formidable and In this case unseen , we urgent and definitive action to combat and defend our right to survival. Playing down the dangers is at our own peril! And was rebuked by someone who is a regular contributor on social and political issues in Guyana --ci
