Just remembering Decoration Day as a child. Relatives from out of - TopicsExpress

Just remembering Decoration Day as a child. Relatives from out of state would send money to Mom and Dad to buy flowers for the graves. We would pack the car with wreaths, some sandwiches and a jug of iced tea and with the lawnmower sitting in the trunk of the car, off to Macedonia cemetery we would go. Dad would mow (with old handpowered push mower) while Mom trimmed around the tombstones and removed old faded plastic flowers. They would stop for a drink and talk about all those who had died, about the men who fought in wars and were buried on foreign soil. It was a day of honor and respectful attitude. I wandered around reading the names and dates of death. With everything neat, clean and newly decorated, Mom would take pictures for the distant relatives while Dad loaded the lawnmower, we would drive slowly home deep in thought. I am so proud to be an American and so ashamed that my children have no such memories.
