Just returned from a trip to Istanbul, the IFCC-congress. Been there for 3 days. Working for the IUPAC/IFCC NPU committee Properties and units in clinical molecular biology and genetics. IFCC and IUPAC cooperate already for decades on producing, updating and expanding recommendations on the presentation of properties and their values in clinical laboratory sciences. The task of our group: investigate and classify newer types of examinations/results in the field, work out semantic models in accordance with the NPU syntax and semantic rules, and demonstrate them in the form of formal NPU definitions. My expertise in this, the HGVS recommendations for the description of sequence variants. The work itself is not very attractive, yet essential to prevent confusion for giving clinical diagnostic results. We made good progress ...but are not there yet.
