Just saw GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, yet another fab film by one of rare auteurs of American Cinema today, Wes Anderson, with more fabulous cameos than a barrel of monkeys, proving that good storytelling without the need for a true story back up to support your reasons for telling that story, as most of todays better films rely upon (12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyers Club, American Hustle, Argo, Lincoln), still exists. Anderson creates not just a world, but a new universe, with impeccable story boarding (this means visual precision with every detail in the frame accounted for and meaningful), and extraordinary visuals, and lets not forget memorable characters. I wanted this film to go on and on. I had friends say liked it, but too long (its under 2 hours) and the trailers showed all the good parts and ruined it for me (seriously? Loved every blessed minute). This is a must see for anyone that loves CINEMA as that terms is defined. Not just movies. Not just film. But CINEMA. And treat yourself to seeing it on a BIG screen as I did at the Coolidge Corner Theatre tonight. Its well worth the effort. Stay til the credits roll; theres a fabulously amusing little animation at the end that should not be missed if you have a sense of humor at all :). AND ENJOY!!! I will definitely see this one again, and think it may well be my favorite Wes Anderson to date, and his films are a tough act to follow even for him!!!
