Just saw an interview with Malcolm Gladwell who writes for the New Yorker. He examined the story of David and Goliath and says that we are putting WAY too much emphasis on the underdog aspect of the story. According to the way Goliath is described, he most likely had a tumor on his pituitary gland, causing his large size. But along with this, he had attendants and was slowly led down to the battle field, which reinforces the tumor hypothesis. Another symptom of this tumor is decreased vision. So, the battle is this: a young shepherd, experienced with the sling is put up against a half-blind giant with only a sword. David had superior technology and full vision. It is not much of an underdog story, but a story of courage to defend your belief.
