Just sharing that Im currently attempting to set-up a home surveillance system using Zoneminder, just in case others here want to set-up something similar. Im testing it out on my Linux Mint 13 desktop first before buying a dedicated home server. So far Ive gotten it to record images based on motion-detection, using my laptops built-in camera. Next step is to test it on an IP-camera, then multi-cameras, then set-up the dedicated server. Then hopefully I can figure out how I can view the system from outside the house. It doesnt work out of the box, but so far fixes have been easy to find by simply googling the error messages in the logs. It has its own very convenient log interface which color-codes the severity of error messages, which helps tell me what to google first. Might be useful for your offices as well. Too bad I already bought a commercial system for my office - my frustration with my office setup is that I cant view it on my Linux desktop since the videos can only be accessed with IE! Well, theres VMs now that allow you to run IE on Linux, so maybe I can try that for the office.
