Just thought Id write today about stairs. It is getting harder for our sweet girl to get on and off of the bus. Its been a while now that weve had to get her started by lifting one foot onto the bus stairs. Usually after we do that she finishes taking the other two steps. Its becoming more difficult for her by the day. Coming off of the bus really is no different. They are steep, she has depth perception issues, so the task can be very scary for her little brain that cannot understand that it will be okay, and her diminishing muscles that sometimes just cant handle those steep steps. Today was one of those days getting off of the bus at home. She just tried to sit when it was time to come down the stairs. It took me and her matron to keep her up so that she would walk down. She was fine once we got down, went into full upright standing but coming off of the bus was no easy task. We are getting used to this as our new norm. Ems walking overall has become more compromised. Weve added an additional person with her at school for walking for Emilys safety. While we know that loss of walking will happen at some point, we must push her more and more to maintain that little bit of mobility that she still posses. So many things rely on core muscles and ability to balance. Walking and being upright helps her keep these things in check. Its amazing to think that this is the same kid that ran up and down steps without even looking such a short time ago. Today she can barely do more than the required three steps with help from at least one person along with verbal and physical prompts. We will push Emily until she tells us that she can no longer handle it. Until then, we curse this nasty illness but hold our heads high for our beautiful girl. If she can push through the days with all she faces, Lord knows we can suck it up and push through too!
