Just to add some new life into this movement, I responded to someones rip on the boycott below. Here is what I just posted - I feel its worthy of a new post, and I look forward to your feedback! To clarify why a boycott is more than appropriate, lets compare BART to other systems in the U.S. BART is the only transit system I know of which punishes riders financially to get to an airport (OAK and SFO both have surcharges), and which is charged based on distance. Here are other major US cities and their large airports fees for train connections to them: Seattle: $2.75 soundtransit.org/Fares-and-Passes/Link-fares Portland: $2.50 trimet.org/fares/index.htm Salt Lake City: $2.50 rideuta/mc/?page=TRAX-TRAXFares Dallas (to DFW & DAL): $2.50 https://dart.org/riding/dfwairport.asp Minneapolis: $1.75-$2.25 (rush hour is more expensive) mspairport/.../light-rail-transit-service... Chicago (ORD): $5 or less mspairport/.../light-rail-transit-service... Chicago (MDW): $2.25 or less Miami (MIA): $2.65 miamidade.gov/transit/metrorail-stations.asp#7 Atlanta: $2.50 itsmarta/fares-passes.aspx Boston: $2.65 https://massport/.../to.../public-transportation/ NYC (LGA): $2.75 panynj.gov/airp.../lga-public-transportation.html Washington DC (DCA): $2.85-$3.25 (including the extra $1 if using a paper ticket) wmata/rail/station_detail.cfm?station_id=82 Newark (EWR): $5.50 NYCs JFK airport is an exception to the above trends. They charge $2.50 for the subway, then the airport charges you $5 to get on their Air Train which brings the total to $7.50 - from ANYWHERE in NYC area. No distance punishment, and still less than BART by far. PHL airport charges between $5 and $8, depending on time and type of ticket you purchase. Still much less than BARTs greedy fares. And now, lets check out BARTs exorbitant fees for being earth-friendly and trying to reduce emissions while going to SFO..... Millbrae: $4.25 (you can walk 2.1 miles to Millbrae station instead, which is free - or take a hotel shuttle to many hotels nearby, for free) Glen Park (still inside San Francisco): $8.25 Powell Street: $8.65 Macarthur - Oakland: $9.05 Coliseum: $9.40 Concord: $10.95(!?) Dublin/Pleasanton: $11.25 Pittsburg/Bay Point: $11.65 (this is the current maximum fare) BARTs greed is about overpaying people who simply dont do much compared to so many other occupations. Its about this whole stick it to the corporate world and corporate culture movement, which is supposed to prompt us to vote with our wallets and only support those businesses which arent screwing the public. Its about a lack of accountability to the public - and the FACT that other cities can manage their transit, get people to the airports, and not charge more than it would cost to drive alone. Its about oppressing those who dont have vehicles by having the gall to actually charge MORE than the cost of gas, wear, and tear if they DID already have a car. Its about using Uber or carpooling, instead of supporting crap transit like BART, which is clearly unique in how they pass their exorbitant costs to YOU, without being willing to take any cuts to their fat-cat salaries, benefits, or the lifestyles to which theyve become accustomed (see video link in next post). So, if you want to stick up for BART now, lets hear it.
