Copied from freedomnewspaper Posted on Thursday, June 20, 2013 Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh has ordered for the closure of two local money transfer companies in an attempt to manipulate the US dollar and other international currencies amid economic downturn hitting hard the administration. RIA money transfer and Worrie money transfer have been shut down by the dictator. The Gambian currency—the dalasi is on a freefall. It has tremendously lost its value in recent times. The dictator is going after small businesses engage in foreign exchange transfer. In fact Jammeh has banned the transfer of foreign exchange from the Gambia to overseas with immediate effect. The business community is increasingly worried about Jammeh’s attempts to devalue other international currencies: such as the US dollar, the British pound, the Euro. Local foreign exchange changers said they have been repeatedly harassed by the government. In some occasions, armed security personnel will seize their cash and hand it over to Yahya Jammeh. Several thousands of foreign exchange have been seized from local dealers. Mr. Jammeh is broke and he is trying to raise money by stealing from the business sector. The European Union economic freeze slammed at his regime is having a devastating blow on the regime. The economy is virtually dead. The government risked shutting down in coming months because there is no funds at this hour to service the regime. Come July, the government said it intends to increase the security collateral for money transfer companies in the country. Foreign exchange companies should expect an additional five million dalasi on their security deposit with the Central Bank of the Gambia. The new directive coming from Jammeh’s State House, will come into effect next month.
