Just to the north of where the Jordan River empties into the Dead - TopicsExpress

Just to the north of where the Jordan River empties into the Dead Sea, stand a series of churches & monnestaries in commemoration of Jesuss baptism in the Jordan River. Although Protestant groups generally baptize themselves at a site thats 60 miles to the north of here, just to the south of the Sea of Galilee, this site is where the Greek Orthodox tradition identifies as the place of Jesuss baptism. This is also possibly the place where the children of Israel crossed the Jordan with Joshua. Interestingly enough, the Israeli-Jordanian border runs in the middle of the site, perhaps the only place along the 250 mile border where tourists on both sides are literally a stones throw away. Although there has been a peace treaty between Israel & Jordan for the past 20 years, there are only 2 border crossings for Israelis along the 250-mile border.
