Just traveled back in time 131 yrs. into Oak Parks storied past after several long lived native Ash trees Unprotected from EAB attack succumbed to the glutinous Asian Phloem Borers, and were unceremoniously cut down throughout the Municipality. As these iconic trees witnessed Cicero township transforming into the community of Oak Park at the turn of the 20th century, while capturing the living breaths of Wright, Jensen & Austin. They began producing a unique record of Spring to Fall weather conditions, contained within each years annual growth rings. Instead of easing the tremendous Failure of these historic losses which today were only teenagers with their 300 yr. lifespans for Green, and 6OO for White Ash by at least utilizing their outstanding slow growth hardwood for lumber that local artists could produce something useful out of. Blundering continues as every one of their Roman column & Chimney sized century+ old trunks were just shredded into ordinary landscape Mulch, which in turn when improperly applied around the base of replacement trees, will drastically shorten their young lives from inevitable advantageous girdling root growth & trunk rot...Now onto the next man made tree disaster which presently threatens settler planted & shorter lived Red Oak species with Wilt Fungus which unlike EAB that did not Disease or Infect easily curable trees, the Wilt is very difficult & expensive to cure sick examples, exactly in the same manor Dutch Elm disease attacks Elm. And unlike temporary danger from EAB Infestations which will inevitably pass locally by year 2020, native examples of Red Oak & Elm will forever be threatened since their identical Diseases continue to survive by allowing these tree species young to seed continued generations before inevitably killed off only after reaching age 25.
