Just wanted to say a quick word about gender parity and THE SPECTRAL BOOK OF HORROR STORIES. Since announcing the TOC for the anthology Ive received messages, or seen comments, from quite a number of people praising the fact that five of the nineteen stories in the book have been written by women, as if Ive done something worthy or ably fulfilled some sort of quota. However the fact of the matter is this: I dont really care about gender parity. All I care about is good fiction, and displaying the many and varied treasures of this wonderful genre of ours in the best possible light. If, in the future, the twenty best stories I receive for SPECTRAL HORROR are all by women, then they will be the ones going in the book. If, on the other hand, the twenty best stories I receive are all by men, then *they* will be the ones Ill choose. If people judge the book solely on whether the writers in it meet their criteria of what they think constitutes political correctness then thats their problem. My only aim is to get the very best stories I can find out there for readers to enjoy.
