Just watched a fascinating program on otters presented by Nature PBS. Otters are low in number due to previous hunting. The Monterrey Bay Aquarium has taken the responsibility to help their survival. I didnt know that baby otters require their mothers to teach them everything they need to know to survive. It is not instinctual for them. The aquarium has had to make use of surrogates at times. Otters require careful grooming of their fur, & they need to eat a lot of food each day. Besides clams, crabs, & abalone, they eat sea urchins which are necessary for the health of the kelp. Kelp beds house more life than rain forests. Sea urchins actively eat the kelp. This aquarium has been successful in increasing the number of otters. Its a very meticulous & time intensive program.
