Just watching John Pilgers Utopia on Maori TV. A documentary depicting the terrible situation of aboriginal people in Australia. The country seems unwilling to recognize its native people as human beings and treat them as such. In this Australia is a failure. To think of Australia as a lucky country. Lucky for who? Certainly not for us, statement by an aboriginal interviewed in the documentary.Australia is a state of imprisonment for black Australia, says Pilger in his film. In that it remains the worlds first concentration camp, as described by Robert Hughes in his book The Fatal Shore. To think of Australia under aboriginal title would seem to be a necessary starting point and then, later, to stop thinking of itself so much as a western country but as way that is shaped by its embrace of native culture and history as the spiritual underpinning of Australia. Of an idea of natural wealth rather than of a native people kept within protective custody, by a state which Malaysias Prime Minister described as Americas deputy sherriff in a black town.
