Just when you thought it was safe to read a Saturday Book - TopicsExpress

Just when you thought it was safe to read a Saturday Book Recommendation without being hit with an epistolary novel, Im back... with an (almost) epistolary novel. Catherine, Called Birdy is a written in the diary form. (Does it count as epistolary if the whole thing is one format? I dont know.) I read this years ago and adored it, and its been recently back in the news--apparently Lena Dunham is planning to adapt it as a movie. Set in the year 1290, it chronicles a year in the life of 14-year-old Birdy, daughter of a minor English nobleman. It is chock-full of details about medieval life, but you wont notice the history lesson--its all sprinkled in Birdys often hilarious diary entries (many of which revolve around her attempts to avoid marrying the various men her father chooses for her.) Birdy is definitely a proto-feminist, and you cant help but cheer for her as she struggles for control over her life in a time when women and girls had few options.
