Just wondering if there is any more information on the calico - TopicsExpress

Just wondering if there is any more information on the calico tobiano horses? The mutation that occurs when horses carry cream and tobiano but it dillutes to the base color. I know it was also thought to be just a somatic mutation but somatic mutations are not genetics and the stud Spooks Skippa Ghost (APHA) has produced quite a few. Back in 2009, 11 out of 23 foals of his were recorded to have the calico mutation. Earlier this year, he has a few grand babies who had it as well. Is it the same type of mutation that is occurring in mustangs and walkers? Has anyone seen that pass through the lines? Now these are like the usual bend or spots, they can vary is sizes from the size of a quarter to the size of a basketball and they dont change really. Has anyone spoken with Sponenberg recently to see if he knows any more information in regards to it? It is just the tobiano gene messing around like it does with other horses with roan spots and what not? Or is it just an allele that is missing? Im not very good with genetics at all, just for curiosities sake. And I know people get mad about the term calico but thats what Sponenberg is referring it as so Ill just stick with it. My horse shown is my mare. She has more then what shown and it really pops in the wintertime but I just wanted to show an example.
