Just wrote the following letter to Prime Minister Harper and M.P.s: Dear Honourable Prime Minister Stephen Harper and MPs of Canada: In this mornings Guardian in Prince Edward Island, I read an article entitled, Generous Man Detained Under Mental Health Act. The article is written by Guardian journalist Jim Day. Apparently, the man was first detained in Halifax but the RCMP there did not find the man to be doing anything wrong. Later, upon travelling to Charlottetown, PEI, he is not only detained but committed to a mental institution. His crime? A Halifax newspaper had earlier reported on the man in question passing out money to people, telling them to thank God and pass the money along if they didnt need it. I have three questions. 1. When did the Charter of Rights stop guaranteeing freedom of speech and freedom of religion in Canada? 2. Under what legislation does the Government of Canada, and its respective authorized representatives, have the right to demand where Canadian citizens spend their after tax dollars? 3. How is this situation different from the one whereby a man can gamble away ALL his wealth in a casino (where the government is the beneficiary) but a man who can afford to give away his money while telling people about the many blessings God has bestowed on his life, is not permitted to do so? I suspect that this man will be released in due time with some politically acceptable spin added to justify his detainment. However, my concern is that once this dangerous precedent has been established -- without a strict accountability and transparency criteria to govern rules of detention -- that the RCMP (and similarly, other authorized representatives of the Government of Canada) may use these same tactics against those who preach the good news gospel of Jesus Christ to the world at large. Martin Luther King, Jr., once said, Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. The article can be accessed through the following link: theguardian.pe.ca/News/Local/2014-03-24/article-3661326/Generous-man-detained-under-Mental-Health-Act/1 I look forward to a timely response to these questions.
