Justice is SUPPOSED to be blind. Racism is a cancer in our society that is continuously propagated by our government, the media, and those who use it for their... benefit. It comes in many shapes and sizes. It is demonstrated through actions and inactions. It is reflected by the words that are spoken and often unspoken. It is the exclusion of relevant FACTS due to a fear of offending. Whether it is to a person’s benefit or ill, when a decision or action, inclusive or exclusive, is governed by ethnicity, it is racist. Due to a history of atrocious racism towards the black community, the government and the media have turned the tables in an attempt at atonement and equalization. The downfall has been that they have tried to overcome racism with racism and continue to propagate an ethnic divide. It is acceptable for a minority group to have scholarships, beauty pageants, and groups that are exclusive to their minority, yet a Caucasian group doing the same would be stoned by society, the media, and our government. We have reached a point where it is viewed as racist to point out factual data if it sheds an unfavorable light on a minority group. This in itself is racist. To omit facts because of ethnicity can be seen as nothing short of racism. The case of Zimmerman and Martin was undeniably a tragedy. But, the original uproar that turned the nation’s attention to Sanford Florida was the accusation that Zimmerman had profiled Martin as a suspicious character because he was black. Was it true? Was it racist if it was true? EVERY person profiles others on a daily basis. It is instinctive and it is a natural survival trait. In Zimmerman’s case, what did he see? He was in a gated community that had been experiencing thefts. He saw a man taller than himself that he didn’t recognize as a member of the community. He saw a man wearing a hoodie. In some cities and business locations such as malls, hoodies have been outlawed because they are commonly used to hide identities during the committing of a crime. Now comes the ethnic angle. We don’t know if the fact that Martin was black came into Zimmerman’s profiling, but what if it did? Look at the image. Per 100,000 people in an ethnic group, there are 5.8 Times as many Blacks as Whites incarcerated. That is not based on racism; it is simply a verifiable FACT. Hiding from such facts does not change them. To fix a problem you must face it and understand it first. With such a blatant disparity on the incarceration per 100,000, being black DID increase Martin’s fit for a criminal profile. Is that fair to a black person? Of course it isn’t. Is it wrong to recognize the fact? Of course it isn’t. It is COMMON SENSE to include ALL relevant FACTS when making a decision. I am not saying this to offend anyone. I am saying this because when you have a noticeable problem, you don’t shove it under the rug or get angry at the people who see it…. You fix it….
