KAIZER Chiefs star striker Bernard Parker is doubtful for Sunday’s Gauteng Cup at Loftus. Parker suffered a re-occurrence of an ankle injury that plagued him last season. Parker, who finished as the double champions’ leading goal scorer, is likely to miss the annual event that will also feature Bloemfontein Celtic and University of Pretoria. “Parker injured his ankle in training,” a concerned Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter revealed yesterday.“He needs to rest. It is unlikely that I will risk him in the Gauteng Cup.” Also out of the cup is central defined Eric “Tower” Mathoho who broke his finger also in last week’s Nelspruit training camp. Said Baxter: “This was a bad break. He had an operation last week and depending on how it heals he could be out for one to five weeks.” But the good news is that full backs Tsepo Masilela and Siboniso Gaxa have recovered fully from their resepctive injuries while central defender Morgan Gould is also back in full training. Gould played in their practice game against Mbabane Swallows at the Mbombela Stadium last Saturday. Baxter said he was satisfied with the two hour session against the Swaziland side, but stressed Gould, who missed most of last season with injury, is still not 100% fit. “We played two halfs of an hour each,’ he said. “Gould played for a full hour, but is still not ready. “He needs more work. But he is getting stronger. “But nowhere near ready for Sunday.” Baxter said he would use the Gauteng Cup and the Carling Black Label Cup at the FNB Stadium on 27 July to fine tune his players for new season. The Absa Premiership champions are scheduled to kick-off against Polokwane City on 2 August. Baxter stressed he would not be rushing into the transfer market: “I am not signing any players for the sake of it. We won the double (league and Nedbank Cup) with this squad. I want quality not quantity. “If the right player or players are available we will try and sign them. “But I do not want to bring in players who are not better that what we have. “That will cause disruptions.”
