KALAZAAR SCARE A high powered delegation of medical experts from Nairobi yesterday held an emergency meeting at the Marsabit Hospital boardroom to discuss all available options to effectively stem the deadly Kalazaar menace in the County. What really puzzled the health experts was a scenario in which patients who were treated for the disease lately returned back again to seek medication after being discharged from the hospital. “It had reached a point where local medical professionals were at pains to effectively pin the disease down to a label. It had reached a point where we were forced to classify this disease as something of a mysterious nature,” The County Director of Health, Dr. Adano Diba Kochi, Said. The team of experts comprising laboratory scientists and clinicians from KEMRI, MSSF, UNICEF and WHO later visited the wards where they took blood samples of the patients to be taken to a laboratory in South Africa for further analysis. According to the County Director of Health, from the time the first case of Kalazaar was reported in the County some few months ago until to date, nine people had already succumbed to the disease. Mass screening for the disease is already on-going in Logo logo and Shur,” he said.
