KARACHI - Muttahida Qaumi Movement had conducted intra-party referendum on Thursday for taking opinion from workers and supporters to join PPP government in Sindh. Sources privy to the matter revealed that majority of MQM workers and supporters have refused to be a part coalition with PPP in provincial government. The polling started at 9:00am which ended at 5:00pm without any break. Ballot boxes were placed in sectors, zonal offices and party offices in Karachi, Hyderabad, other cities and towns of Sindh and others provinces also. In a press briefing at Nine Zero, MQM’s Deputy Convener Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui terming the referendum a beginning of new chapter of democracy in the country said that MQM had laid the foundation of strong Pakistan by asking the opinion of masses in such an important decision. Siddiqui said that only few days back soon after getting the invitation from Sindh government to join them we had committed before media to seek public and workers opinion whether to join the government or not. He added that media is the witness that people enthusiastically participated in today’s referendum. He informed that ex-member of National Assembly Dr Abdul Qadir Khanzada was appointed as the Chief of Election Commissioner of this public referendum while renowned intellectual Long Khan Channa, Professor and poet Khawaja Rafique Anjum and Hameeduz Zafar were the members of the election commission. He said that today both the camera’s eyes and people of Pakistan has observed the practical proof of “masses involvement” in entire Sindh including Karachi. MQM has set a unique example of real, durable and participatory democracy, which is a role model for other political parties of the country to include public participation on the verge of difficult decision making. To a question, Siddiqui said that 5 million ballot papers were printed. Meanwhile MQM Chief Altaf Hussain while talking to party workers and office-bearers via telephone said that workers and sympathizers of MQM shown that they were strongly committed with the party. Altaf asked about the details of the referendum and paid tribute to the office-bearers and workers busy in the process.
