KARACHI: Zakaria Usman, president of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), on Tuesday stressed the need to resolve the issue of Karachi Mass Transit project that was planned years ago, a statement said. Usman said that the mass transit is one of the unfortunate projects in the country’s history that had faced inordinate delays, it said. “Though several years had passed, the work on the project could not be started due to bureaucratic hurdles,” he added. The FPCCI president said that Karachi is now 60 times larger than it was when Pakistan was created in 1947. “It is the world’s fastest growing mega city such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Lagos, Jakarta, Mumbai, Delhi and Chicago,” the statement said, quoting Usman, as saying. He said that 15 years ago the transport system of Karachi was satisfactory, which was consisting of the circular railways, KRTC buses, private coaches and taxies. The state-owned circular railway and big buses were gradually diminished due to the lack of maintenance and attention of the authorities concerned, it said, adding that now after 15 years, the people are at the mercy of thousands of three wheelers and Qingqi. “We should have upgraded the transport system instead we dropped it from our standard.” He also said that many of the potential benefits of urbanisation will be hard to realise unless there is improved city governance and serious efforts to reduce the level of violence in Karachi. The president of the apex trade body requested Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the governor and chief minister of Sindh to give priority to the Karachi Mass Transit Project, which needs sincerity for implementation, it added. ln.is/shar.es/VMaDI https://twitter/CNA_Alerts
