KATHMANDU, JUL 12 - India has always been the most sought-after education destination for Nepali students. Although it’s difficult to trace exactly when Nepali students started going to India for education, the country has been an education hub for Nepalis ever since the Gurukul system of education started. The trend rose further after the advancement in the academic system with the initiation of formal education several decades ago. Since then, the flow of Nepali students to India for education has been increasing significantly. Although the trend of going to traditional India n education destinations like Patna, Banaras, Deradun, Naitital, Darjeeling and Gorakhpur for school level education has slowed, the attraction to India for higher education has been increasing every year. The number of Nepali students traveling to India for higher studies further rose after the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia — other popular destinations for higher education among Nepali students — adopted tighter visa rules for students. Apart from its proximity to Nepal and affordable tuition fees, the fact that the two countries share similar culture makes parents feel India as a secure destination for their children’s higher education.
