KAYENTA RESIDENTS: The Indian Health Services (IHS) provided an update report on the Kayenta IHS Clinic to the Health, Education & Human Services Committee (HEHSC) on Oct. 2. The report is a result of community complaints about the shortage of staff at their clinic. The area director met with the Kayenta Health Board and chapter officials on Sept. 3 as directed by the HEHSC. The meeting included discussion on staff shortage, staff recruitment, federal government shutdown and funding issues. Staff recruitment: Three (3) pharmacists have been hired, pharmacy supervisor still vacant, two (2) dental positions remain vacant, one optometry position is vacant to join one existing position, medical director has been filled, chief of medical staff has been filled, two (2) pediatricians have been hired and IHS is negotiating for a third one and there should be a total of five (5) when fully staffed. Two (2) family nurse practitioners and two more providers are being advertised. Service within the emergency room is being addressed by the IHS administration. Several complaints were received, so changes are being implemented to provide better customer service and reducing wait time. A “greeter” has also been added to the patient area to help direct patients. The IHS reported many of the providers at Kayenta left for positions at the Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation (TCRHCC). They indicated that their future plans include aggressive approach to hire staff at Kayenta and fill vacancies, and to continue to address patient concerns. The IHS changes will hopefully improve healthcare delivery in the Kayenta service area. Currently, many of the Kayenta-area patients are going to Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation because of the staff shortage at their clinic. As a result, TCRHCC is experiencing an overflow of patients outside of their service area and have also absorbed the costs of care. The HEHSC will continue to pressure the IHS to better manage their facilities.
