KCRMs Mens Center courtyard (read parking lot) looks like lots of folks homes: three tomato plants and two pepper plants, a calico cat dozing in the sun, two men exchanging views at a picnic table under an umbrella, a ladder leaning against the wall, a hose dripping near the door. Whats different is the line of men along the south wall, hats over their eyes as they nod off on the bench. At 3:30 they can check in, see a case manager or the nurse, sign up for a bed, ask about their mail. But for now, they lean back, some snoring off and on, others sipping from cups of water they got from the five gallon cooler in the corner. A man just outside the gate lies full-length on the sidewalk, an extra shirt tossed across his eyes to block out the sun. Two men swing their legs from the concrete wall adjacent to the parking lot across the street. They smoke and discuss the possibility of a job opening up on Walnut Street. As I pull into the street, some of the guys wave and holler, Drive safe, and Dont run over me! One of the guys routinely teases me about my Fiat. If you hit me, Ill total your car, he says.
