KENNEL COUGH ALERT! Is your dog vaccinated for Kennel - TopicsExpress

KENNEL COUGH ALERT! Is your dog vaccinated for Kennel Cough? We are currently seeing multiple dogs with the symptoms of Kennel Cough. Unlike its name it doesnt just spread in kennels but in dogs who are in close contact with other dogs, for example with dog walkers, dog day care or even in busy dog walking parks. SYMPTOMS: Dogs tend to have a harsh cough which happens in bouts and then they often retch as if they are trying to be sick or get something out of their throat. They can have a runny nose, weepy eyes and be lethargic. Some can be completely normal behaviour with the occasional cough. Symptoms may vary IF YOUR DOG IS COUGHING: Please keep it away from other dogs until all coughing stops. Bring them in, we will often give antibiotics to protect them from secondary infections and can help control the cough and other symptoms. PLEASE let us know before you come in if your dog is coughing so we can follow contamination protocols so we dont infect unaffected dogs. PREVENTION: We do not routinely vaccinate for kennel cough, we normally just vaccinate dogs at high risk. If you walk your dog(s) in the parks in our area, they are currently at risk. The vaccine sets in in 3 days so is worthwhile giving in the face of an outbreak. Check your vaccine cards or ring us if you are not sure what vaccine your dog has had.
