KIDNEY HELP INITIATIVE Our MISSION 1)To help the middle/lower class Nigerians bear the economic, social, and psychological burden of end stage kidney disease/chronic kidney disease. 2) Creating awareness about kidney health among Nigerians hence promoting prolonged life and improved general well being. WHAT WE ARE ABOUT. Kidney help initiative was born out of the burden to help alleviate the sufferings, especially in terms of finances, of patients with end stage renal disease. The visionary, Dr Tolulope Okulate, is a senior registrar in the Nephrology unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. She saw the plight of her patients who had been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. She noticed that patients and their relatives were overwhelmed by the cost of treatment. She saw the overwhelming effect of the diagnosis of CKD/ESRD not only on the patients, but also on their relatives in terms of the cost of supportive treatment- Haemodialysis . Often times, relatives exhausted all their life savings on haemodialysis, which is just an interim/supportive medical intervention. In spite of the provocative amount of money spent on haemodialysis, the patient still ended up dying because the family just could not afford to keep up with the cost of medical treatment. Haemodialysis costs about N25000 per session, excluding the costs of other medications. Ideally, patients who are dialysis dependent should have about 3 sessions per week but unfortunately, most patients can only afford 1 session per week.
