KING OF LESOTHO BEGINS STATE VISIT The King of Lesotho, His Majesty King Letsie III, arrived this morning to begin a three day State Visit from the 12th to the 14th of May, at the invitation of His Excellency Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama. The visit is expected to strengthen and deepen ongoing cooperation between the two countries. This morning the visiting King was given a ceremonial welcome upon his arrival at Sir Seretse Khama Airport by H.E. the President, who was joined by H.H. the Vice President, Dr. Ponatshego Kedikilwe, the Hon. Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Margaret Nasha, Cabinet Ministers and members of the Diplomatic Corps. The two Heads of State thereafter met for talks at the Office of the President. Thereafter the President hosted a State Banquet for the visiting King. In his remarks at the State Banquet, President Khama noted that Batswana and Basotho indeed share a common ancestry, cultural affinities and linguistic similarities, as well as the fact that both countries will in two year’s time mark Golden Jubilees. The President also noted that there are great similarities in guiding pillars and key deliverables of the two countries’ long term visions. President Khama went on to pledge the Government of Botswana’s commitment to further deepen and widen the scope of bilateral cooperation for the mutual benefit of Batswana and Basotho through the Joint Commission on Economic and Technical Cooperation. A cardinal initiative under this Joint Commission is to explore prospects of sourcing the much needed resource-water-from Lesotho. The President, therefore, expressed his hope that the tri-lateral Memorandum of Understanding which was signed in March 2013 by the two countries and South Africa, under the auspices of the Orange Senqu Water River Commission will result in the realization of this envisaged water project. This afternoon H.M. King Letsie III visited the Baylor Children’s Clinical Centre and Ntlo ya Dikgosi. Tomorrow morning the King will depart for Lobatse, where he will visit the BMC and stadium. Thereafter he will travel to Kasane. On Wednesday the King will return to Gaborone, where he will tour the Diamond Trading Company before departing for Maseru.
