KINGSTON, Jamaica — Deputy General Secretary of the ruling People’s National Party (PNP) Raymond Price says that despite criticism from the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in light of the Central Westmoreland by-election, his party has passed the people’s test. Pryce, who was speaking to OBSERVER ONLINE earlier today, said that Dwayne Vaz’s victory at the polls yesterday has sent a clear message to the JLP of a clear rejection by the Jamaican people. “If people from the Opposition said it was a referendum and let us say they are correct; what is the referendum telling them today?” Pryce questioned. Pryce said a test was set for the JLP which they failed, referencing Vaz’s victory of 8,720 votes to Faye Reid- Jacobs’s 6,268. “He who has gone up and down these fourteen parishes for the last year talking about the PNP is passing the IMF test and failing the people’s test. Well see a people test there... a test is set, they sit the test, they fail the test and they now curse the test,” he said. He dismissed suggestions which sought to discredit the margin by which the PNP won the seat, made vacant by the sudden death of Roger Clarke, arguing that it was comfortable. “The margin for Local Government election traditionally is less than the margin for General Election and the margin for by-elections historically are less in terms of voter turnout,” Pryce explained. He said that several JLP candidates who lost in the 2011 general election would have loved to win with the margin by which Vaz won. “Dwayne Vaz polled more vote than Marlene Malahoo-Forte polled on December 29, 2011. “He has outperformed his opponents and he has outperformed the person who polled the highest in a contested election in that constituency in the general election for the Jamaica Labour Party, he outperformed Marlene Malahoo-Forte even with a low voter turnout,” he added. He said the better comparison would be to look at the voter turnout in the general election.
