KIRIBATI is understood to have bought around 6000 acres of land on Fijis northern island of Vanua Levu as the climate change crisis escalates. It is believed the land previously belonged to the Anglican Church. Fijis military leader, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, while speaking at the 9th Pacific Islands Conference on Conservation and Protected Areas last year, said that his government would not turn its back on the nation of Kiribati in its hour of need. If the sea level continues to rise because the world wont tackle global warming, some or all of the people of Kiribati may have to come to live in Fiji, the PM said. Kiribati is one of the regimes staunchest allies in the Pacific, driven mainly by its need for land and its transportation links through Fiji to the outside world. Bainimarama said his government faced a range of unprecedented and perplexing decisions as it contemplated giving them refuge against the rising sea. We clearly cannot have another sovereign nation within our borders. So what do we do? Are these people prepared to become Fijians? Can they be dual nationals of Kiribati and Fiji? How will the whole thing work? These are just some of the aspects we are having to consider as the climate change crisis escalates. fijitimes/story.aspx?id=253761
