KNF(N) CALLS BANDH ON AUG.15 IMPHAL, Aug 12: The Kuki militant outfit KNF (Nehlun) has called (chakka) bandh with effect from 5 pm of August 14 till 5 pm of August 15 within the territory of the proposed Kukiland in protest against the alleged step-motherly treatment of Kukis by the Government and Government of India’s failure to consider the demand for a separate Kuki State or Kukiland positively. The KNF submitted a memorandum to the Government on February 8, 1992 for introduction of a bill in the Parliament for creation of Kukiland as the 26th State of India. This was followed by many more memorandums and reminders but no response has been forthcoming till date, the outfit decried in a press release issued by its information and publicity secretary Gogou Vaiphei. Saying that the Government of India created Mizoram for the Mizos, Nagaland for the Nagas, Arunachal Pradesh for the tribes living here, Meghalaya for the Khasis, Garos and Jaintias, Karbi-Anglong for the Karbis, Gorkha Councils for the Nepalese and other separate administrative units for other tribes, the KNF-N asked why not Kukiland for the Kukis. KNF also submitted a memorandum to the Government of Manipur, but it was never taken up for discussion. Nonetheless, KNF-N would not cease their activities until and unless the demand for creation of Kukiland or statehood for Kukis is achieved, it asserted. According to the KNF-N’s press release, the proposed Kukiland comprises of the whole districts of Chandel and Churachandpur in the South, a part of Tamenglong in the West, a part of Senapati in the North, a part of Ukhrul in the East and Imphal, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts of Manipur valley in the Centre. The outfit further informed that media and essential services would be exempted from the purview of the bandh. -TSE
