KNOW YOUR CANOLA! July 2014 There are two significant differences between the canola oil we use in Drew’s delicious All-Natural Dressings/Marinades versus the “typical” canola oil used in most other salad dressings: EXPELLER-PRESSED: We do NOT use canola oil that has been chemically processed in any way. We use only expeller-pressed oil in all of our products which means the oil was cold-pressed from the seeds mechanically… literally pressed out. This leaves a small amount of residual oil in the seeds and is therefore more expensive, but avoids the chemical extraction process. Unless the ingredient statement says “expeller pressed”, the residual oil in the seeds was mostly likely extracted using a hexane solvent. The hexane extraction process results in a lower cost for canola oil because more oil is yielded from the seeds, but at Drew’s we do not believe in using canola oil processed with hexane solvent. NON-GMO: Our canola oil is sourced from seed stock that is certified as not genetically modified. The majority of canola oil on the market is in fact made from GMO seeds. However, we feel it is important to go to the extra expense of buying only Non-GMO canola oil. In fact, all of the ingredients in our products are Non-GMO and as a result our items are certified to be Non-GMO by the recognized authority on this matter, the Non-GMO Project. Look for their seal of verification on our product labels and visit nongmoproject.org for more info. (Note: The Organic soybean oil we use in Drew’s tasty Organic Dressings/Marinades is Expeller-Pressed, Non-GMO and is Organic too!) IS CANOLA OIL UNHEALTHY? Occasionally we receive inquiries from consumers who are concerned because they’ve read somewhere or been told by a friend that canola oil is not healthy. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of incorrect information about canola oil on the internet. Canola is in fact widely considered to be a healthy oil. Please reference the following two articles. From Mayo Clinic, one of the most respected medical institutions in the world: Article link (mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/canola-oil/faq-20058235): “Ive read that canola oil contains toxins. Is this true? Answers from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D.: Health concerns about canola oil are unfounded. Canola oil, which is extracted from the seeds of the canola plant, is generally recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. Misinformation about canola oil may stem from the fact that the canola plant was developed through crossbreeding with the rapeseed plant. Rapeseed oil contains very high levels of erucic acid, a compound that in large amounts can be toxic to humans. Canola oil, however, contains very low levels of erucic acid. Canola oil is also low in saturated fat and has a high proportion of monounsaturated fat, which makes it a healthy and safe choice when it comes to cooking oils.” From WebMD, a URAC-accredited American company which provides health information services: Article link (webmd/food-recipes/canola-oil): “Canola oil is one of the best oils for heart health. Made from the crushed seeds of the canola plant, it has less saturated fat than any other oil commonly used in the U.S. Check out the numbers: Canola oil has 7% saturated fat, compared to 12% for sunflower oil, 13% for corn oil, and 15% for olive oil. Cutting down on saturated fats helps cut your cholesterol levels. Canola oil is also very high in healthier unsaturated fats. Its higher in the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) than any other oil except flaxseed oil. ALA is particularly important to have in your diet because your body cant make it. Studies show that ALA may help protect the heart through its effects on blood pressure, cholesterol, and inflammation.” FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS In summary, we spend a significant amount of time, cost and lots of extra care to insure that our wonderful All-Natural and Organic products are made with only the best ingredients. We enjoy our products on a daily basis at home with our own families and we sincerely hope you and your family will enjoy them as well!
