KNSG TO BUILD N150 MILLION WOMEN SKILLS CENTER -KWANKWASO Kano state government is construction a permanent complex for women skills acquisition at Jakara, in the state capital, at the cost of N150 million. The project will consist of 24 classes and other facilities and is expected to be ready for commissioning by September, 2014. The state governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso disclosed this during the celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day in Kano, which coincided with the graduation of 750 women trained on various skills, separately, by the state Hospitality and Tourism Institute and Jakara Sana’a Foundation. 500 of the trainees acquired skills in home-based hospitality and tourism related small scale businesses while the remaining 250 women were trained on tailoring, weaving, leather work and toiletries making. The governor explained that the center is being constructed in recognition of the complementary role being played by non-governmental organizations towards skills development and poverty reduction. He noted that the government’s women development programmes are achieving he desired results, adding that “Kano is experiencing positive change as a result of the bold steps that our administration is taking towards improving the lives of its citizenry particularly women, youth and children”. Governor Kwankwaso disclosed at each of the 500 trainees from the Hospitality Institute will get a free capital of N20, 000, totaling N20 million while the 250 from Jakara Sana’a Foundation will each get a free sewing machine. He, therefore, urged beneficiaries of the two programmes to make best use of the opportunity to improve the welfare of their families. In her speech, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Binta T. Jibrin said the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Inspiring Change for Women”, stressing that the present administration in the state has made the welfare of women a priority, as demonstrated by its women and children policies and programmes. The National Team Leader, Mobilizing for Development (M4D), a DFID funded project, Mr. Charles Abani lauded the untiring commitment of the state government in changing the lot of women and girls, hoping that the government will continue to work with his project in helping women to fully exploit their potentials.
