KOCH OFFENSIVE FAILS AGAIN AS KANSAS CLEAN ENERGY LAW STANDS STRONG On Wednesday, the overwhelmingly conservative Kansas House of Representatives voted to keep the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), rejecting a repeal bill that made its way through the state’s Senate. The RPS mandates that Kansas produce 20% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. A coalition of Democrats and Republicans in the House united against the repeal on economic grounds contending that rolling back the standards would hurt the growth of the wind energy industry in Kansas, which has brought billions of dollars of investment to the state and created thousands of jobs. The attack on the widely popular Kansas RPS was heavily supported by Americans For Prosperity, the Heartland Institute, and the American Legislative Exchange Council, all front groups heavily supported by the Wichita, Kansas-based Koch brothers. This is now the third time the Kansas House of Representatives has rejected repealing the state’s RPS. Efforts to repeal renewable standards in nearly 30 states over the last year have been 100 percent unsuccessful, but because this bill failed right in the Koch brothers own backyard, it is seen as an especially symbolic victory for renewable energy supporters.
