KOOM TURBULENCE CHRONOLOGY Wed 20th-Aug: A moran asks Borana herders for assistance of a water trough to water his animals, the herders rejects. Moran goes ahead destroying the trough despite intervention by his colleagues. Borana herders takes it for offence. Thur 21st-Aug: Around 4pm, a small gang of men comes for retaliation of the act to assault any Samburu on sight at the water point. They find a moran watering his animals and they start shooting sporadically. The moran crawls in the nearby bushes and fooling death. No sooner had the bandits reached him, than he springs back to action shooting back and killing one and injuring two. The rest of the gang retreat Same day late evening: Part of the gang storm Gotu peace workshop threatening to kill 4 Samburu participants from Sereolipi, Gotu Peace Ambassador intervenes. The gang retreats and finds two morans from shopping in Koom, trails them to a lagga where they made a stop putting down their luggage, making fire and preparing tea. Bandits take cover and contract for a clear view to shoot, they start firing killing one moran instantly and wounding another. Same night, gangs amass numbers and plan to strike nearby Samburu manyattas in Koom. Unclear reports has it that, some even dropped by lorries. Fri 22nd-Aug: Bandits raid manyattas in Koom 4AM in the morning making away with unspecified number of animals. Warriors calls for backup from their colleagues and pursue the stolen stocks and recover successfully. Around midday, a second group of bandits takes advantage of absence of warriors in manyattas after leaving to battle ground. They attack making away with unspecified number of animals, this time around even bigger. No strong resistance and the animals crossed Waso River by 2pm to Isiolo side. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reports has it that part of the animals recovered. Warriors are exhausted to pursue two battles the same day. Community conservancies in Samburu and Isiolo have taken positions together with government forces to counter the advancing bandits with many animals. Samburu leaders dispatched ambulances to Koom and three choppers. MPs Lentoimaga and Letimalo left earlier joined by Lati and Governor later. We pray for peace, small mistakes can be catastrophic in volatile environments.
