KPFK News BREAKING: Heres a few news items were picking up from the wires and our news sources out on the field: About two dozen activists with a Boycott Israel group gathered at the port of LA in an effort to block the loading of Israeli goods to one of the busiest port of entries in the world. An organizer says theyre with the BDS Israel movement calling for freedom in Palestine. They chanted, held signs, distributed flyers and spoke with port workers. Cleaning crews descended on a main stretch of Skid Row in downtown LA as part of a stepped-up effort to clear the streets of debris while simultaneously reaching out to the homeless to offer medical and mental-health services. Operation Healthy Streets will include a series of scrub downs in the one-square-mile Skid Row area. The effort began along San Julian Street between Sixth and Seventh streets, with crews sweeping up garbage and debris. Homeless groups have criticized some city outreach efforts as patronizing and ineffective. The Compton chapter of the NAACP wants federal investigators to take a look at what they say was the unprovoked beating by a LA County Sheriff deputy of a 29-year-old, mentally ill man in a park on July 14th. Activists say Barry Montgomery suffered a broken eye socket, broken ribs and other serious injuries. Deputies say Montgomery took a swing at one of them while being questioned about smoking pot. According to a new housing affordability study, its becoming more difficult for a working-class family to afford a home in the city. The California Association of Realtors says prospective home buyers need to earn just over $90,000 annually in order to afford the median home price of about $416,000. Its bad news for many low and moderate income Angelenos who are forced into the rental market where prices have soared.
