KPL however, say they are yet to discuss the pros and cons of FKF decision The 2015 Kenyan Premier League will feature 18 teams as opposed to the 16 who took part in the recently concluded championship. Nairobi City Stars, who were relegated from the top flight, are the biggest beneficiaries as the new format gives them another chance in the premiership. The move was announced by the Football Kenya Federation after a national executive meeting yesterday. To necessitate the execution of the larger format, FKF say two teams, in addition to the already promoted Shabana and Posta Rangers will be brought on board. “The 16th team in the KPL, Nakuru All Stars, will be automatically relegated to the lower league while the 15rg team Nairobi City Stars FCwill remain in the league,” reads the FKF statement. And to fill the 18th slot, “the two first runners up in the FKF National Super League Zone “A” (Kakamega Homeboyz) and “B” (Nakumatt FC) will square it off in a one off match and the winner takes the third qualifying slot.” “The playoff match between Homeboyz and Nakumatt F.C will be at the Afraha Stadium, Nakuru on November 22, 2014. “We believe the 2015 season will now be more exciting and competitive,” added the statement. FKF said the move is within their mission to rekindle the spirit of Kenyan fans hence the need to have a bigger representation in the top league. “Football Kenya Federation have noted with pride the growth of our top league which is now rated as among the best on the continent. However following years of turmoil in our football our federation inherited the 16 league format from the former FKL,” added the statement. However, the move appears to have taken the KPL by surprise and threatens to ignite the never-ending feud between the federation and league running body. KPL CEO Jack Oguda said: “We believe the statement by FKF is a proposal since we are yet to sit and discuss it. I talked to the president (of FKF) Sam Nyamweya who promised to convene a meeting between us (KPL) and the NEC. We should all sit down and discuss the pros and cons of such a big league and then come to a conclusion,” added Oguda. “We (KPL) have always been for a 16 team league but when we meet we shall know whether a bigger league is a better idea.” Gor Mahia won the 2014 edition on the final day courtesy of a 3-0 win over KRA in Kisumu as their closest challengers, Sofapaka were held to a 2-2 draw by Tusker.
