KSBW Editorial Board apparently believes that the people of Monterey County are incapable of electing a sheriff. The press is specifically mentioned in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Their importance was noted by the framers of our founding document. The problem lies in the fact that the journalistic press has relinquished their responsibility to the people. The press has become an active participant in the political process. Once they decide to endorse a candidate, or censor their reporting to benefit a particular candidate or issue, they lose all credibility. KSBW and other corporate media outlets have done just that in the recent race for the office of Monterey County Sheriff. I have repeatedly given information to local news agencies only to have it ignored. The latest example of this is the recent death in the Monterey County Jail. I contacted the KSBW newsroom and informed them that an inmate had died in the jail, and a number of other inmates were found to be under the influence of narcotics. KSBWs response was five days later, and it was buried in their print section under three other stories. At least three other media outlets had reported the information I passed along from my sources. What was KSBWs response to my questioning why they hadnt reported on the jail death? They removed my postings (questions) from their Facebook page. They claimed that the information I posted had not been substantiated, so they pulled it off their page. The problem with that is that the Californian, Herald and County Weekly had already confirmed what I had asked about on the KSBW FB page. So why then do they censor the question of a concerned citizen? Well it is obvious to me, theyre biased. I could go on to numerous situations where theyve ignored the truth or failed to ask questions of those they seem to support. I did notify Felix Cortez that he interviewed Scott Miller while Miller was in uniform. A clear violation of the Government Code section 3206..... I was ignored. Why do they ignore me when I give them solid information? Because they seem to know better than the uneducated masses (little people) that they put news stories out for. The elitist mentality is showing itself with people like Heston, Calkins, Mitchell, even Miller and Parker. Theres this idea that if you dont have a degree then you are undeserving of recognition by them. KSBW interviewed Calkins for his opinion on the race..... didnt he get canned from a minor market newspaper last year? So much for his higher education. Hes resigned to a hate blog with a few hundred of his loyal readers. So when Mr. Heston goes on the air to give his diatribe about changing our state Constitution, I have to shake my head. He seems to think that the citizens and employees of the sheriffs office are incapable of electing a leader to the position of sheriff. With elitist arrogance he suggests that you should give up your rights and allow a group of politicians to appoint a sheriff. How many of you have read your state constitution? The Legislature shall provide for county powers, an elected county sheriff, an elected district attorney, an elected assessor, an elected governing body in each county..... Dont give up your rights and hand them over to self-serving politicians who could use law enforcement to serve their own needs. Image the political machines promoting cops who go after their political enemies. I can think of numerous places throughout history where thats gone wrong. Its easy for Mr. Heston to sit up on his perch and look down on us like we are serfs. But remember you have the power to take away everything he has by boycotting his channel and the people who advertise on KSBW. Hes undeserving of the responsibility that the constitution affords him. The people of Monterey County have seen what Scott Miller has done as sheriff. They did so without the help of the press. It has been a rarity for the press to print anything even close to the reality of what Scott Miller is. However, they have plenty of poison in their pens for Steve Bernal, the choice of the little people. You can anticipate that they will find every flaw and exploit it to its fullest. Theres a reason I gave up television years ago.
