KShs 5.7 MILLION DROUGHT RESISTANT SEEDS FOR BARINGO FARMERS The county government of Baringo has today received certified seeds worth KShs 5.74 million to be distributed to farmers across the county. While receiving the 40 tone consignment, which included sorghum, fingermillet, green grams and cow peas sourced from KARI, Baringo County Deputy Governor Eng. Mathew Tuitoek called on farmers to take advantage of the certified seeds and work hard on their farms so as to be food sufficient and create wealth. The seed programne which is supported by World Bank through the State Department of Agriculture and the County Government aims at shifting focus to, and strengthening Traditional high value crops as a way of guaranteeing food security. Engineer Tuitoek said that the seed distribution programme especially targeting the arid areas of Baringo underlines the governments commitment towards eradicating hunger within the county. The CEC for Agriculture Hon. Luka Rotich said that the 40 tonnes will be issued to farmers in the six sub counties and they will be expected to return to the government twice the amount given to them to increase county seed stock and guarantee sustainability of the programme.
