KUDOS, OGUN TRACE COMMAND The initiative of Ogun State government at empowering the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) in the state has been described as proper ways in developing road networks and accident free in the newly 6 lane roads in the state, and a way of reposition the officers and rebrand the men of Trace Corps on traffic worthiness in the state. Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, was promulgated and established by an enabling Law of the Ogun State House of Assembly, as amended in 2007, as a government agency charged with responsibility of road traffic matters to ensure itch free journey and accident free in the state. The Corps Commander Ayo Sangofadeji at a 2- day capacity building workshop for the TRACE operative in collaboration with the ARRIVE ALIVE ROAD SAFETY INITIATIVE (AARI) and POTAB CONSULTING, held at the Staff Development Training Centre, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, stated that the officers and men of the Corps have been exposed to different level of training, retraining and organizing capacity building workshops and seminar geared towards professionalism in order to ensure service delivery. The Trace Corps has had various workshops through Bureau of Establishments and Training under the auspices of the office of Head of Service in the state to empower and enlighten the officers on traffic management and crises, training and re-training of the men of the corps is in line with the government policy to maintain laws and orders on roads and the newly 6-lane roads across the state. Though, apart from the basic training course that qualifies officers and men as regular operative, which has now been conducted four (4) times, with the support of the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Army and other Para-Military Agencies. Other in-house training by TRACE Management with the cooperation of the government and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), have also taken place, all in an attempt to rebuild, re-brand and reposition the Corps, which is so much in tandem with the rebuilding mission of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration. Moreso, the Trace collaboration with Arrive Alive Road Safety Initiative (AARSI) and Potab Consulting in training, rebranding Trace Officers will further expose men of the road traffic management to new trends, orientation, proper conducts and dictates in traffic management the world at large needed in managing traffic problems that might arise in the future. However, we must realize that the new lease of life and ambience for socio-economic development is not without its attendant challenges. Ogun State is now open for business but it also means that the state must be prepared for the influx of more people and increase in people and vehicular traffic. In that case, the Ogun State transportation system and management must provide effective and adequate machinery for the safety of lives on roads, that is why the initiatives of training and retraining of officers in the state is highly welcomed and appreciated by the people of the state for effective and efficient conduct of officers on roads. With these initiatives, it becomes imperative for officers of TRACE Corps to readily position themselves to be well equipped with the required knowledge to put the state on the positive side of the traffic situation in the state. And the Trace Officers needs to demonstrate improved efficiency and higher professionalism in the handling of traffic situations. The TRACE Officers needs to consider the capacity building workshop as a rare opportunity and take optimal advantage of the proceedings; as this will go a long way in reducing crashes on roads, and not to achieve the goals of the United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety but also to maintain the Ogun Standard.
