KWS offer to support projects for communities living around Lake Turkana Efforts are underway to provide wildlife conservation and community enterprise projects for communities living within Sibiloi, Central Island and South Island National parks ecosystem in the northern Kenya. Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) enterprise department is already working with Dassanach, Elmolo, Gabra, and Turkana communities, indigenous communities living around the three national Parks, in capacity building and enterprises development. The new initiative is aimed at providing the community with alternative grazing grounds, water sources and livelihoods. It will also raise conservation awareness of the local communities on the benefits of the national parks and its natural resources. Several training sessions at Illeret, North Horr and Loiyangalani targeting Community Based Organization (CBO) leaders have been undertaken. KWS has also conducted exposure trip for selected CBO leaders to provide opportunity for the leaders to interact and get first-hand experience from some of the already successful groups such as Wasini women group and Mida creek. The leaders visited KWS parks. From this experience, local communities are now partnering with KWS officials during security patrol to secure the acclaimed World Heritage site. Lake Turkana, an inland sea surrounded by volcanic boulders and purple hills blanketed by brilliant sunshine and star-studded nights is situated 900km north of Nairobi. The site is an ideal destination traveler seeking to experience bio-diversity at its best: ornithology, anthropology, archaeology, culture, fishing, game viewing, astronomy, photography and adventure. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997.
