KYIPs corrosion corner in the summer of 1991 on the west side of the field , was quite an eclectic place. Its semi regular denizens included Kittyhawks lone DC-3 N302SF, which was based there, a DC-3 or 2 from Century Airlines, several Kittyhawk Convairs , and the occasional exotic visitor in the form of a turbine 3 or in this case an ATL-98 Carvair . Looking like the bastard love child of a DC-7C and a 747, the Carvair was sure to turn heads wherever she appeared. I had seen my first one in Dayton several years before part of Frank Mosss late and lamented Great Southern Airlines, which along with a straight DC-4 struggled valiantly to make a dent in the heavy end of the on demand market. What broke them was a trans Atlantic charter gone wrong over Thanksgiving weekend in 1987, carrying munitions for the Government , the old 4 had lost two engines on one side over Greenland , and had struggled at the minimum enroute altitude over the ice cap , two feathered , and two screaming it had limped into the first available port whereupon they surrendered their cargo to an Air Force C-141, made some emergency repairs , and retreated back to Dayton Cox to lick their wounds. The Carvair and the wounded DC-4, indeed Great Southern disappeared shortly after. This Academy Air example awaiting its next summons to duty, basks in the sun with 302, another day in the non sched freight life where the trill of the beeper can mean JFK , Monterrey and everything and anything in between.
