KZN commissioner condemns murder The provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni has strongly condemned the recent attack on the Shezi family in Ematimatolo, Greytown. Police have handed the investigation over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), as allegations of police involvement have been levelled by the victims. In the early hours of Thursday, 27 June 2013 at approximately 03:00, four persons who claimed to be police officers arrived at the Shezi homestead in the Moscow area of Ematimatolo and removed five members of the family. The victims claim that they were taken to nearby bushes, where they were allegedly assaulted. The suspects accused them of being involved in a murder case that was reported earlier in the month. After the alleged assault, they were dropped off at separate places and the attackers left in a police vehicle. Three of the victims went to police and reported the attack, while two were still missing. Later that day, the remaining victims were found in the bushes and taken to hospital for treatment. One of them died as a result of his injuries. A case of murder, kidnapping and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened at Ematimatolo Police Station and the matter was reported to IPID for further investigation. The commissioner voiced her strong displeasure over the incident and vowed to ensure that those who were responsible for the callous act will be brought to book. “We will fully co-operate with the IPID investigation and ensure that we do everything within our control to make sure that the perpetrators are identified. An internal investigation will also be conducted and any police officer that may be identified as being part of this group will be dealt with harshly,” she said.
