Kabita Bhattarai - Harward graduate busy earning goodwill of 5 lakh lepors Raxaul: There will be only few who would venture close to a leper, leave alone tend and care, but the way Kabita Bhattarai reaches out to them is extraordinary. Setting up an ashram in a remote corner near the Bihar-Nepal border, she has treated nearly half a million patients for free in her 240-bed leprosy hospital. This organisation is beautiful, these people are unnaturally beautiful, Kabita said. Kabita wants the patients to not see this as charity, thats why while the treatment is free; the family members work voluntarily at the fields, handloom units, hospital, school and dairy farms, contributing to the community. Kabita manages 21 colonies housing leprosy patients, provides free education to over 1000 children living in Raxaul and teaches vocational skills. You see all these people were once beggars, their fathers were beggars, but now they are not. But they are still in low level job which will not help them to change dramatically, but whoever has gone to graduation level, their lives have changed. Its a biggest change you could see in one lifetime, Kabita said. When Kabitas mentor Baba Christodas passed away, he left the responsibility of running the ashram on her. Kabita hopes she can fulfill his last wish to one day make the project financially independent and leave it for the next generation of leprosy patients to run. youtube/watch?v=PTCa-EIpF-U
