Kaduna Assembly okays N2.07bn for state varsity The Kaduna State House of Assembly, yesterday, approved additional N2.07 billion funding for the state-owned university. According to Vanguard, the state government has spent N465.4 million on the rehabilitation of 79 roads across the 23 local government areas of the state, Mr Ishaya Yem, General Manager, Kaduna State Public Works Agency, has said. The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that this followed the passage of first supplementary capital estimate for the Kaduna State University. The request for the supplementary budget was forwarded by Gov. Mukhtar Yero to the legislature. The governor had said the N2.07 billion would be secured from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. He said: “The amount would be spent on infrastructure development aimed at improving facilities for conducive teaching, research and learning.” The House, at its sitting presided by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Peter Adamu, unanimously approved the request. Chairman, House Committee on Information, Alhaji Yakubu Yusuf, told newsmen after the sitting that the money would greatly help the university to discharge its mandate. Yusuf said the amount would also cover research farms, library materials and the development of a teaching hospital. Meanwhile, General Manager for the state Public Works, Mr Yem, told the NAN, yesterday in Kaduna that 47 of the roads were within Kaduna metropolis, 18 in Zaria and 14 in Kafanchan. He said that the rehabilitation work was carried out between January and May, and involved the filling up of potholes to enhance safety for road users. Yem said that the rehabilitation of the roads had been completed and the agency would soon embark on the second phase.
