Kaimosi Friends Primary School is or was the only school in the Republic of Kenya where, when you are caned you say Thank you And it had to be a genuine Thank you. Tell you what, we used to have a gathering famously known as Kamukunji which was a forum where all, say Class Eights would gather in the dining hall to receive their exam results. When the meeting starts, the teachers are so nice, they sooth you and encourage you to be good boys and girls, and mention all those sweet words you would love to listen to. The tone changes immediately three junior kids pop in carrying cyprus canes from Kaimosi Forest. They carry the canes the same way an accountant carries files from one office to another for an audit! I tell you, it was hell on earth. The results would be released and those who fail, anyway almost the whole class, one by one would go down the floor moving from one teacher to the other as you received your share. When one teacher was on the back the previous one would be winding up on your butts as the other on the legs. Your role here was to shout....Thank you, thank you... as you move down the floor. The last teacher on the line was the headmaster who once you reached there, you would force yourself to stop crying, get the best cane on earth and shout a bold THANK YOU SIR as if you had just received a Grammy Award!
